'Final Fours' didn't even exist as a term or concept until

the late 1970's, that is when the phase first started appearing. Any final four appearances before like 1978 is just someone retroactively applying today's concepts on a past time period. A program making a 'final four' before that point was only losing 1 round prior to the championship game from their perspective at the time.

MU made an 'Elite Eight' in 1944 by losing its opening round game of an 8 team tournament field.
