exact opposite of ours...
They only have seven (7) NCAA tourney appearances in their entire history. Normally that's the resume of a garbage program that won their weak mid-major conference a handful of times, then got KO'ed in the first or second round in each appearance. But not Loyola...
Here are their 7 NCAA tournament appearances: (note: the tourney began in '39)
... 24 years w/o an appearance, then ...
• 1963: Won the national title (in their first NCAAT appearance ever)
• 1964: Elite 8
• 1966: Sweet 16
• 1968: Sweet 16
... 17 years w/o an appearance, then ...
• 1985: Elite 8
... 33 years w/o an appearance, then ...
• 2018: Final Four
• 2021: Elite 8
There are several noteworthy things to point out from this.
First of all, to have multiple Final Fours and a National Title — in just 7 NCAAT appearances spanning across 60 years — is astounding.
Second, sandwiched between their DEEP tourney runs in 2018 and 2021 were two very mediocre seasons.
Third, they reached the Sweet 16 or beyond in all 7 appearances. They've never lost in the round of 64 or 32.
Mizzou, on the other hand, has 28 NCAA tournament appearances (4 *times* as many as Loyola, with better seeds) yet has never reached the Final Four — let alone TWICE and winning the entire thing.
I'm not sure which NCAAT history is more improbable, but one thing is for sure — Loyola is the antithesis of Mizzou in terms of NCAA tournament luck.
