a deep run in the tourney. Loyola Chicago's 2018 run is a case study in luck. They made it to the final four and their best win was against a 3-seed. Other than that, they beat a 6, 7, and 9 seed to make the final four.

If you're not a top 5 team in any given year, it really is just a lot of luck to get deep in the tourney. Luck in both winning games and also other teams being upset.
