most sports fans know the Terrapins/Terps.

They're a better cultural fit for the Big Ten.

They're a good "gateway" for possible expansion down the east coast, in particular UVA & UNC. It probably helps their chances with ND as well.

They've won meaningful things over the years.

There are other factors I could point out, but the fact that BigTen fans universally lament over the addition of Rutgers – but not Maryland – is all the proof you need.
