the species works, there are way more not smart people than smart people. And then someone can be among the very bright and have no real expertise or perspective on a given topic.

That is the reason we have bright people who have particular areas of focus and dedicated experience. Not everyone can know everything about everything. That is fine, you aren't supposed to. Certainly not if you were dumb to start with.
