I do think it looks like he went toward the guy with the gun.
But they had been following him for some time (they've admitted as much) and he felt boxed in. He couldn't run away, and any rational person would feel threatened if followed by multiple men with guns.
Active shooter guidelines are "run, hide, fight." He couldn't run. They were following him in trucks. He couldn't hide. It was an open street in broad daylight. That leaves fighting. Confronted and cornered by armed men, he made what appears to be a final attempt at defending himself.
