improving the football program in every single area.
Remember, Alden got here and experienced the end of the Larry Smith disaster... he knew how horrendous of shape the program was in.
Recruiting, TV, support, the roster... we were tied with Baylor for worst program in the conference. Worse the Iowa State and KU.
We had lost 11 straight Big 12 North games... pretty much all of them, massive blowout losses (i.e. 66-0 to Kansas State, 38-20 to Iowa State, 21-0 and 38-17 to KU back-to-back).
We had nothing in 2000.
Nothing.
Pinkel so drastically changed the program in every single facet.. for the better. And did it quickly too. They were immediately better and more competitive at everything.
8 win team already by year 3.
The most exciting QB in college football - Brad Smith.
And he had monster recruits coming to Mizzou by 2004 - 2005. We were getting the Ruckers and Maclins, Coffmans, the Nash's and Temples..... elite local guys that we NEVER EVER got before.
We had Daniel coming in... and there was HUGE anticipation for him.
And he was already to take over in 2006.
No... Alden wasn't firing the only good thing he had going for him at the time.
Not for a team that went 6-5 in the regular season... not even if they lost the bowl game and went 6-6.
Not even if they lost to Iowa State and went 5-6 and didn't make a bowl game. Wasn't happening then either.
People don't know this because it was too long ago... but when we won our final game in 1996... we went 5-6... and tore the goalposts down and celebrated for having such a good season.
Not kidding.
That's how disgusting Mizzou football was.
That even a 5-6 season.. was rare and cause for the entire town to celebrate.
Pinkel was safe.
Because even if they finished 5-6.... it would have been our 4th best season in the past 22 years.
That's how horrendous the program was.
