You're right. It wasn't fair of me to make personal assumptions based upon disagreement.
I have a hard time telling members of a historically oppressed group of people to "stop complaining" or "things aren't that bad." In my line of work and with my travels, inequities are pretty apparent, and I'm a white lower class guy who grew up in a small midwestern town.
The reality is that the ancestors of white Americans (and therefore us) benefited from the oppression of African-Americans. Go to Charleston, SC and look at the wealthiest old homes downtown. Look at where the middle class and upper class live and go to school today. Look at who has owned those homes and for how long. Their wealth was being made off the backs of poor people of color who were not even provided with the same rights under the law. The system simply doesn't provide equal opportunities to everyone.
Now, is it intentionally arrogant? No. Does it mean you aren't a decent guy? Of course not. Does it suggest we could be blinded by our privilege? I think so.
I do apologize for not discussing this with more civility and equanimity. I need to be better than that.
