For some, "safe hire" and "great hire" are the same thing...

I'd rather take a chance.

I also think a lot of people are blinded by Crean's good seasons and it causes them to overlook the majority of seasons which were either bad or mediocre.

TV and radio pundits are more likely to speak their minds and give their honest opinions than sportswriters and journalists.

Some put Crean near the top. Some put him near the bottom. Combined that with what I've seen on message boards and heard from other fans, I think it would be a controversial hire. However, there probably would be more than a handful of sportswriters declaring it as a "good" (i.e. safe) hire. if that's what you want, you'll be happy I guess... until a few years later when you'll eventually hate him like Marquette and Indiana fans do.
