They failed because the coaches used a two-quarterback approach despite not having two good quarterbacks.
Most teams don't use it because they don't have two quarterbacks who actually bring value to the table without overlapping. It's a problem when you do it out of necessity (don't have a good QB) or when you're forcing it (can't decide on two similar QBs for stubbornly forcing an athlete on the field just because).
If Zanders and Lock are both capable SEC starters, they're different enough in their approach that it can be successful.
