Many school clubs are really, really good. They'd compete with many varsity-level teams at other schools, and often have the attention of their own schools' varsity coaches, almost like a farm team (take BC women's club lacrosse, which is national champion level for clubs). But then you have all the added (and heavy) expenses that are not covered by the school and therefore price out a lot of families that are already paying for college.

What a tangled web...
