There is no objective way to determine who is the best candidate for any job. Anyone who works in the corporate world sees people get hired and promoted not based upon merit all the time.
“Networking” is constantly harped on as a key to getting hired, again not meritocracy.
Anyone droning on about meritocracy is too stupid to pay attention to when they got jobs for reasons other than being the best possible candidate.
It’s a way for people to masturbate thinking they are the captains of their own fate.
