yes the 12 team model is new, but we have 50 years of how teams are judged - from the pre-BCS, to the BCS, to the 4-team playoff, and now this system.
Putting aside what the talking heads like to talk about, it's fairly clear that SOS is just used when two teams are about equal - a game difference. It doesn't really trump winning all that much, especially when we are talking about P4 conferences members. If you are a 1 or 2 loss SEC or Big 10 team, you will be in the playoff regardless of how bad your OOC is.
