The committee decided not to lower rank of losing teams in the conference tournaments basically.

They clearly did not think Clemson belonged, so got the auto bid.

Bama had both 3 losses, and a bad loss to OU that kept them out (on top of them not wanting to nudge down conf champ game losers, since they had SMU ahead of Bama last week.)
