d2 National championships would probably be absolutely unthinkable for you but a guy 1-20 against top 150 teams at Cleveland St, and historically bad in just his 2nd season here is perfectly acceptable.
Little harder to recruit better players than your conference mates at Mizzou than Cleveland State. There's zero excuse for big money conference teams to not have good players. Knowing what strategies to employ and which players can best translate those strategies out onto the court means everything at this level. Year 2 means so much more than year 1 because it takes into account a coaches ability to adapt not only to his player changes but the new ways in how opponents attack and defend his team.
Gates failed miserably this year in all of these areas.
