1. Hopefully no one really believes the coach-speak BS Pingeton gave right after it was announced in March that she was coming back for another year. After being here for 13 years, it is more likely the sun will begin rising in the west and setting in the east than it is that she can fundamentally change who she is, how she recruits, and how she coaches. As stated above, after 13 years we know what we have in her, and she’s not going to change in any fundamental, meaningful way.
2. After the “glory days” (such as they were) with Sophie, which in fact weren’t exactly so glorious after all from a national perspective, never coming remotely close to getting just to the Sweet 16, Pingeton squandered all the good will and promise of those 4 years and followed them up with 4 straight years of not even making the NCAA tourney as one of the last few flawed teams to barely get an at large bid. When a coach has not built a solid foundation by their 10th year at a program of recruiting at a high enough level to make the tourney every year, they have failed.
3. I’m optimistic that DRF has already made her decision on Pingetons future, and the only reason she didn’t pull the trigger after the 2022-23 season was largely financial, which is at least defensible on some level. My concern is that this years team might be marginally better and barely get an at large bid and promptly lose in the first round, and that is seen as just enough to add another year. I’m hoping DRF will take a hard look at RPs entire career here, regardless of what happens this one season, and conclude that a younger coach with a much higher ceiling and demonstrated success is the way forward.
