It's entirely plausible that Kobe Brown was the difference between winning & losing in the *many* close wins we had last year.
Without Kobe, we lose most of those and possibly don't even reach the NIT.
I'm not criticizing Gates, I'm pointing out that his modestly successful first season could have been due to players he inherited from Cuonzo, in addition to winning nearly *all* the close contests (in highly improbable fashion, which is why our Kenpom 'luck' rating was off the charts).
Remember, Cuonzo had a really good first season as well.
