Pinkel was trying to protect the program he built and preserve the very tough but fertile STL recruiting ground? I've heard that Pinkel begged the team not to boycott the game, and when he could not get them to change their mind so he backed them. It was a colossal failure of leadership on every level. Pinkel was caught not paying enough attention as he was down at the Lake each night, not knowing that seeds of division were being sown by players and coaching staff.
I find it ironic that a dismal fanbase walks away from the program as if they weren't already there, many of them, because we were winning year in and year out. Jesus, it was an unfortunate mistake by many, I never have understood what was so damning about that incident that fans vowed to never come back. I always looked at it like it was another embarrassing chapter in the same novel as the Ricky Clemons riding on ATV and the jailhouse tapes, and the Mike Anderson presser that started late because the BOC was deciding whether to fire the Athletic Director.
We've seen Iowa and Texas have racial unrest, but the fans rode out the issue and supported the Athletic Dept and it faded out.
