To actually avoid the pitcher batting late in games the manager was forced to replace one of his position players with a weaker player. How did that improve the team?

Anyone who ever watched Jose Canseco play right field knew the guy should never have taken the field. The DH allowed him to hit and a competent fielder to play defense.
