They STILL don't understand what happened in 2015. The closest comparison I can up with that everyone understands is the stock market crash of 1929. It took 30 years for the market to recover from that. It doesn't matter that all the people are gone that caused the problem. What happened was you lost a significant amount of people who were interested in your product. And not just fans. High school players around the country saw what a mess Mizzou was. You think that didn't effect recruiting?
There was one very brief moment for Mizzou to recover quickly from it. If they had won the East again in 2016, or at least competed heavily for it, that might have been enough to turn things around quickly. But they made a terrible coaching hire (because no one else wanted the job) and were terrible in 2016, and the following years.
So all the "goodwill" Pinkel had built up by winning for a decade was GONE. And now you have a terrible coach and a terrible team and HS kids that don't want to come to Mizzou (the good ones at least).
So Mizzou became a rebuilding job. It's as simple as that. Sure another coach will get it done someday, but it's a process and will take time. So it's not so much what happened in 2015 that's killing Mizzou, but the results of what happened. The fans will come back when they start winning again, but the status of program got knocked back to 1991 in 2015. It will take time to recover, just like the stock market in 1929.
