Even if the team wasn't great, you used to know the players and became emotionally invested in them to some degree.
Everybody remembers that 2007 team. The names Daniel, Maclin, Rucker, Coffman, and Temple are forever etched in our memory. They were Mizzou guys, through and through. And we followed those guys from their commitment thru their graduation and beyond. 2007 was a special year, but there were a lot of highs and lows along the way to get there. Even before they started winning at a high level, you could still root for the players to do well and get better for next year. Without the guarantee of next year, will I still be interested in following? I don't know.
That is what I used to love about college football, living thru those moments with the players that I had established a sort of distant bond with from following them since the end of their high school days. Are those days gone? Maybe. I think the portal has destroyed some of it. I have no real issue with NIL itself, but the way it is being used in conjunction with the portal will mark a major shift in the game. Like I believe free-agency has destroyed pro sports, which I don't watch at all anymore, I suspect college sports will eventually fall down that same path.
