Howland has been at MSU for 6 seasons, and 3 of those seasons were NCAA-caliber.
His first 2 years were rebuilds at a garbage program. He didn't inherit players like Geist, Barnett, or have several elite recruits/transfers fall into his lap. He had to rebuild MSU from scratch, the same way he did at Pitt and UCLA where he reached 3 Final Fours.
He's been tourney-worthy in 3 of the past 4 years. It's disingenuous to discount his Top 4 SEC finish that would have *surely* resulted in an NCAA bid if not for the tournament cancellation due to COVID. He was also cheated out of bid in 2017-2018 when Geist's flop erased a game-winning 3-pointer.
But most of all, he has crushed Cuonzo head-to-head (5-1) despite being a program where it's virtually impossible to win.
