Some say Pinkel was "loyal to a fault" but in reality he just didn't have the balls to fire anyone. And I'm guessing you wouldn't either if you were a manager.
Pinkel's weakness was on full display in 2015 when he was unable to stand up to some of his players who had turned the program into their own personal political platform, and threatened to boycott the team unless Pinkel's bosses were fired.
With that said, sometimes it's impractical or prohibitively expensive to fire someone. In Wilks' case, even if the defensive struggles are mainly on him (which I doubt) it's simply too early to fire a DC. Doing so would not only be expensive but make it virtually impossible to find a quality DC to replace him.
