national level, not necessarily regarding local governments, but the situations are still analogous.

People who hate the US government can move to a different country. People who hate Missouri government can move to another state, people who hate St. Louis government can move to the county or to another city, or out beyond any city limits.

Even kids who inherit a home in an HOA must obey its rules or face the consequences. There may a lien on the home due to HOA fines because their sick, elderly parents didn't mow the grass or trim the bushes. They may have to take the bathroom in the basement out before they sell the home because it doesn't meet their current codes. or take down the satellite dish or fence or whatever. They may also be limited on how they can advertise the home. For instance, ours has limits on the size of the sign and prohibit putting "reduced price" or anything similar on the signs.
