The reality is that Texas has always been in a league where they were the overpowering brand and revenue generator.

The SWC needed Texas
The Big 12 needed Texas
The SEC didn't and doesn't - which is why it finally works with them in a conference

They are now an equal partner, rather than carrying nearly everyone else
