TX & OU could have continued as the Big 12 with sufficiently competitive payouts. They've committed an unforced error.
It's not like the SEC has done anything brilliant here - two highly valuable assets have literally surrendered themselves for terms - my god - it doesn't take genius or vision to simply provide those terms and integrate the windfall.
The tricky part of the equation is the LB8.
As each day passes this group becomes more amenable to a greater range of offers - i.e. the price is dropping.
Further, TX & OU want in NOW and they don't want to pay $70M each in penalties to do it.
These upcoming games in the Big 12 are lame duck sessions - they already carry a foul stench of irrelevancy.
Sankey, if he really is the best conference president, should broker a deal whereby:
The LB8 gets some sort of affiliate membership where the remainder of the SEC schedules them with priority for out of conference games.
Boost the LB8 with the sort of value they formerly received from the TX & OU matchups.
The deal doesn't have to go beyond 2025 necessarily - but the Big 12 is going to want something of comparable value to the huge payouts that TX & OU would owe for an early exit.
Maybe matchups with top SEC teams is enough to make up the difference.
And if that isn't enough, decrease the payouts to TX & OU through 2025 and give that money to the Big 12.
Five more years of TX & OU in the Big 12 isn't going to happen, but the problem now isn't whether this is a good deal historically for the SEC or how the SEC is looking historically vs other conferences - the real problem is how to get TX & OU over with as mitigated penalties as possible.
Me for one, I'd love for Mizzou to play Kansas a few times while they're down, but that's just a personal preference...
