He WAS a carpenter at that point. That doesn't mean the second he is not pounding a nail he is not a carpenter.

When you haven't studied something in 30+ years, you're no longer studying it. That's different than taking a break to sharpen your pencil.

You're a HS teacher and have been for 30+ years. You're not a physicist because you studied physics in college over 30 years ago.
