U of Texas led the membership review committee and was determined to get even with NU when they left the Big 12.
Also, I think the Ivy schools and others were sick of the B1G bragging about being "the only conference with every school in the AAU", and Nebraska provided an opportunity for the other AAU members to finally end that.
To be clear, you're right that the B1G would not have added Nebraska if they had lost their AAU status earlier, but I highly doubt the AAU would have taken the extreme measure of kicking Nebraska out (despite their "probationary status") had they not joined the B1G and provided the extra incentive to do so.
The B1G didn't see that coming, since no school had ever been kicked out of the AAU before, given that it required a supermajority vote to happen. As it turns out, there were BARELY enough votes to remove Nebraska, and Texas played a major role in that. From what I've heard and read, there were a lot of politics involved behind the scenes.
