if Texas and/or OU left the conference. The hypothetical "New Big 8" would have been the equivalent of a stripped car and given that the school depends on outside revenue, yes it would have been a very serious problem.

And at the time Texas and OU were flexing their muscles. There was no "Our Gang, put on a show" atmosphere. If Texas had decided it was in their interest to leave, they would have. And OU, well they're Texas' *****. They're aligned with them not the old Big 8 schools. Mizzou only did what they had already considered and that was what was in Mizzou's best interest given the scenarios.
