There was a long period of time, from the 1960's into the 1990's, when a significant number of folks at Mizzou wanted and sought Big Ten membership for academic reasons. The period began in the 1960's about the time of the University System of Mizzou, UMKC, UMSL and Rolla was established and generally ended with the formation of the Big XII,
During that period there was a substantial faction of Mizzou folks (admin, faculty and alums) who believe the State of Missouri would be best served if Mizzou became a "destination university", i.e. one who strong academics and research efforts would attract students from across the nation. During that period undergraduate enrollment grew steadily, but gradually, and admission standards rose. Mizzou's national reputation rose slowly, but steadily.
During most, if not all of that period many at Mizzou considered it to have the best academics/research in the Big Eight and to have many cultural similarities to the Big Ten area.
There were reportedly "feelers" extended both ways about Mizzou moving to the Big Ten, possibly in combination with the Big Ten adding Notre Dame. At one time, a poll of Notre Dame faculty showed almost unanimous support for its move to the Big Ten.
One of the attractions of the Big Ten for Mizzou was the Committee On Institutional Cooperation. It was made up of the Big Ten schools and fostered joint/multiple research efforts by Big Ten schools, i.e. two or three or perhaps more would jointly conduct a research project. The "CIC" was publicly described as the "800 pound gorilla" in American higher education research.
The interest in the Big Ten generally came to an end with the creation of the Big XII and the decision by Mizzou to address expected reduction in funding by the Missouri legislature by increasing student enrollment.
Mizzou leaving the Big XII was not considered again until the re-alinement of the 2010-2012 period.
