tually, no one needs any marks or anything. It is just random sampling, much like polling, to get at least a rough idea of how many people in a community have been infected.
It can make a huge difference in accurately evaluating things like how many people already have immunity... eg. infected but were symptomless or mild symptoms and have already recovered. It also gives them a far more accurate estimate of how lethal the virus is. Estimates have ranged from over 3% to .01%. That makes a HUGE difference in how many people would likely die from this, how likely a tidal wave of new deadly cases might hit an area, how likely it is to overwhelm hospitals. If half of the people have already been infected, for example. This would die off on its own & they could remove the restrictions.
