If you are mocking someone for what they believe you are not open to the possibility that they may be correct.

I respect those who say ‘I do not believe in God, because I do not see proof of his existence.’ That is a reasonable stance.

I also respect those who say ‘I do believe, because I see the finger of an intelligent being required for the complexity of life on Earth.” I think their reasoning is flawed but still respect the belief.

The groups that I do not respect are those on both sides who mock the other side or wish to force their beliefs on others.
