My guess is that he is not a big Manafort fan but he dislikes the tactics of the prosecution even more.

Judges are not innately hostile to prosecutors, a vast majority of them were prosecutors in their younger days.

That would cause anyone with an ounce of curiosity to ask what is causing this hostility?

He is either disgusted with the prosecution and their methods or he has been compromised. Since I hear no one suggesting the latter then the only sensible option must be the first.
