restrictions on what private citizens may possess. My argument is that currently the constitution allows NO restrictions. We could easily amend the constitution to put some common sense restrictions in place.

This will never happen because of zealots on both sides. A well written amendment could end much of disagreement here but the 'you can have my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands' group and the 'all guns are evil and no one should have one' group will never allow the 90% in the middle to come to a reasonable compromise.
