Well, Paul was in a period recruiting converts. Found it difficult if they had to get all Jewy and get circumsized and eat Kosher. Requiring one to follow Jewish Law as Jesus had done and Jesus advised others to do was a barrier to recruiting.
Seems to me from what Jesus said, that the WAY was similar to what Siddhartha Gautama achieves in India 500 years or so prior - through a modified ascetism and outright rejection of material acquisition. You want the Way of Jesus you take your staff. You beg for alms. You dedicate your LIFE to the spirit, to God. That is what many Sufis have done from time immemorial. Or at least the time of Daniel. Abraham could be thought to be a Sufi in that regard as follower of El or Elohim.
Paul is of course the central figure. There is no Christianity today without his work and zeal. We have today basically Pauline Christianity - which I imagine historic figures such as Peter and James and perhaps Jesus himself would counter.
