Yes, the team/program currently is abysmal. I'm not certain what the "college basketball world" thinks of us, currently.
If Mississippi State can get a Ben Howland or an Auburn can get a Bruce Pearl - these coaches, while they've got baggage, are proven successes to some degree - then Mizzou can find a good coach.
Structurally, there's nothing "wrong" with Mizzou: Aside from our current coach, most everyone has had some level of success here. It's possible. The current state of the program isn't great, but any coach knows ANY job that's open will be like that , to some degree.
Mizzou is a large state school situated between two large metropolitan areas, in a great conference. Not the best (ACC) conference, but a great conference.
What Mizzou needs to do in order to attract a good coach, at market price, is get all the "other" things right. In other words, what, besides money, would a good coach want for his job? Facilities, how he interacts with his boss, assistant coaching budget, etc.
Rather than making the Coach K homerun hire, Mizzou must make a very good hire, and then be exemplary in supporting that coach if it is to find long-term success at basketball.
