to Ukraine in return for Ukraine giving up the nukes it inherited from the USSR.

Point being, this story didn’t start with Crimea or Victoria Nuland or the Maidan Revolution.

And you asked “Why should Ukraine not have to give up territory.”

That’s why - the US and Russia agreed to respect Ukraines sovereignty and boundaries following the dissolution of the USSR. Ukraine gave up their only means of self-assurance of their sovereignty in exchange.
