Do you typically book hotel rooms directly with the hotel in order to take advantage of rewards programs, or do you use sites like Hotels.com or Expedia for slightly cheaper rates?

Just curious which comes out ahead in the long run

I can get rewards points on my credit card regardless, but wasn't sure if like Hilton rewards or Mariott rewards were worth it vs a price that might be 10-15% cheaper through a 3rd party site
