Playing travel ball has his own gear. A decent bat is several hundred dollars now. Same for gloves and if you play multiple positions there are infield gloves, middle infield gloves, outfield gloves, firstbasemens mitts and catchers mitts. If you are playing at a high level you want your own glove for every position you play.

This does not even take in league fees and costs to travel.

Soccer, volleyball and basketball all have lower equipment fees but team fees and travel make them very expensive as well.
