Who cares if there are more teams and more variety and excitement? They want to grow the sport and fan interest. It harms no one to have teams from all over competing for playoff spots. If they want to gerrymander things for one conference that's fine but it doesn't have to be an absolute. It's like MLB. You have weaker divisions but the the division winner gets in and maybe wild cards from one other division.
