if one insists on a 'completely objective' formulaic method, there are plenty of mathematical algorithms that could be employed and tweaked as needed.

Or would some sort of voting system by fans or "experts" or coaches or some combination thereof make it "objective enough"? ... a law of large numbers sort of thing to minimize gaming the system, so to speak?
