I just think we have different definitions of independent. A firm who's equity partners can make their own decisions is independent. They can decide to follow the money, follow their conscience, blow with the political winds, etc. But a firm that has given their promise to Trump (or the government) doesn't really control their fate anymore. They are not independent. Trump or the government can tell them what to do. The firm that stood tall and controls their own fate is independent.
