Not caving in to basically extortion does keep you independent. The firms that have promised to do $X amount of work are by definition no longer independent, as they are bound now to do what Trump wants them to do. The reason some firms are not caving has nothing to do with which side of the political aisle things are on, it has to do with them having the freedom to choose the cases and clients that they want to choose, instead of having that dictated by the government. Kind of the definition of an independent firm.
