have to be intertwined. the problem with the playoff now isn't the number of teams or who gets a bye, it's the gross imbalance across conferences.

there's no debating that there are only 2 power conferences now. and the gap between them and everyone else will only continue to grow wider. any playoff that includes teams from the lower conferences at the expense of the power conference teams is just a farce. and choosing teams based on polls or a committee is always going to be subjective and equally farcicle.

we need two conferences, with 4 divisions each. those divisions play each other and their results determine who wins their division. division champs play each other to determine who advances to the conference championship, then conference champions square off in a national title.

essentially the same model as the nfl. only real questions are who goes into what division, but that's relatively easy to figure out, and who gets relegated to the also-ran conferences, which honestly is also pretty easy to figure out.
