I know you've all been on the edge of your seat waiting for it, so here it goes:
- Ditch 12th game, which for most teams is a garbage FCS or lowest level FBS game
- No FCS allowed on schedule. Last week of August optional preseason week vs FCS where teams can get a practice game and FCS can still get paid.
- Ditch conference title games. They are redundant and largely add more confusion than clarity with current goofy conference configuration, and waste a week on the schedule.
- Season goes from Labor Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend
Move to a 24 team playoff. 2 regions of 12. Regions are named after legendary coach rotating year to year on name. This gives tons of teams something real to play for very late into the season. A few of the lowest level bowl games will probably get bumped to the point of ceasing to exist. Oh well. Playoff notes:
- First round played on campus, higher seeded team is at home
- Quarterfinals in each bracket are played on campus as well, so that teams with a bye get to enjoy a home game too
- Top 4 seeds in each region get a bye
- Semifinals in each bracket and games beyond that are played as bowl games
- Selection criteria is the top 24 in the playoff rankings. Nothing else. Conference titles are not a selection criteria.
- First round games are the weekend after the last weekend of the regular season. This gives teams with a bye 1 week to rest but eliminates the rust factor. This also gets the majority of the playoff done in December and wrap things up in early Jan.
This year's playoff:
Saban Bracket:
1 Oregon vs. winner of 8 South Carolina vs. 9 BYU
2 Texas vs. winner of 7 Miami vs. 10 Mizzou
3 Notre Dame vs. winner of 6 Alabama vs. 11 Syracuse
4 Tennessee vs. winner of 5 Boise St. vs. 12 Colorado
Pop Warner Bracket:
1 Georgia vs. winner of 8 Clemson vs. 9 Iowa St.
2 Penn St. vs. winner of 7 Ole Miss vs. 10 Illinois
3 Ohio St. vs. winner of 6 Arizona St. vs. 11 Army
4 Indiana vs. winner of 5 SMU vs. 12 UNLV
Seeds are based on this year's final college football playoff rankings.
