College football was exploiting it's entertainers the whole time and the fan 'master class' were a bunch of deluded southerners (mostly) who were either in denial or fully in the know as to what was going, what the dynamic of the situation was.

NIL corrected it and then the institutions themselves, having lost control to the fans, sought to regain master status through the settlement.
