Obviously, nationally televised.
N C State was undefeated the year before but was declared ineligible for the NCAA tournament that year because of alleged recruiting violations dealing with David Thompson.
UCLA was coming off an undefeated 30-0 season in which they pretty much blew everybody out on their way to trouncing Memphis State behind Walton’s 44 points.
So it was a great #1 vs #2 matchup in St Louis on national tv during the Christmas break. I got my tickets through a lottery in the mail (got Final 4 tickets twice the same way).
Game was close at halftime but then UCLA blew them out in the 2nd half.
It was quite a show. UCLA with Wooden and Walton and their tradition vs NC State with David Thompson, 7’4” Tom Burleson, and 5’7” Monte Towe and their colorful bell bottomed red and white warmups and their pep band playing their fight song over and over again. Lifetime memory.
I just read a book about that 1985/86 Boston Celtic team and the author made the point that he thought that team was the greatest of all time.
Watching Bird hit Walton with a pass at the high post and then watching Walton flick a blind pass over the shoulder back to Bird for a layup was worth the price of admission.
Walked around on the old Boston Garden floor after the game and you could literally feel the dead spots.
