I'll admit, it's really hard to break away from the Americanized view of Christianity. I was there for a long time, but the more I study His word and understand both the narrative and cultural context, I slowly learned that the things that we (in the American church) hold as "good" are actually ungodly constructs that we've added to scripture (much in the same way the catholic church married their doctrine to the pagan acts of conquered lands in order to make it more palatable).
Imagine Paul telling the Ephesians that it's ok to take pride in the legions of Rome and one of the 7 wonders of the world in their very own city.
