Conversion System, which features its GameDay 3D Synthetic Turf System.
The Rams were once the only NFL team still using the AstoTurf brand, but not the old stuff, having installed the company’s GameDay Grass 3D system, a rubber infill system similar to the others across the league.
Prior to that, the Dome used a FieldTurf brand surface from 2005 to 2009. Prior to that, it used an old AstroTurf product from 1995-2004.
FieldTurf is the only manufacturer with four fields in the top 20 according to Sports Illustrated — good for an overall average ranking of 17.8 out of 30. (The average ranking for all other synthetic turf companies is 22.2.)
The FieldTurf Classic HD at the Indianapolis Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium comes in at No. 13, the highest-ranked non-grass field on the list — also making it the league’s best artificial surface. With a new fiber designed for softness and durability designed to also hold in the rubber infill for less ‘splash,’ the Colts play on a popular artificial surface.
The AstroTurf Magic Carpet II system rolls up an entire field in one monolithic piece. The field is lifted from the floor using a system of pneumatic blowers to reduce friction. It is rolled onto a single core, which can be floor mounted or fully/ partially recessed into the stadium floor.
Pros:
Quickest conversion time of all convertible systems
Monolithic piece means fewer seams
Most highly engineered field conversion system on the market
Cons:
Highest initial investment
Requires extensive engineering and pre-construction planning to accommodate weight of rolls
Facilities may be retro-fitted but must be able to handle weight of the system/ roll
