is the 2nd tier of college football. which very well may be the strategy. they see the SEC and realize that they're a solid step down, so if they can't beat 'em, at least suck up everyone else and make sure the gap between you and #3 is wide.
the new era of sports programing is about quality of product and marquee matchups. it's why networks and streaming services pay a premium for monday night football and bowl games and premier league soccer, while 2nd tier leagues like the MLS and USFL and mountain west get whatever they can get.
as long as the SEC maintains its stranglehold as the premier conference in college athletics, it will demand a premium and adding a few schools on the margins really won't change that at all.
all that said, i could see the SEC and b1g both going to 20 and aligning in an AFC/NFC style arrangement that essentially makes everyone else irrelevant.
